This lecture will introduce and describe the principles of infection control. The hallmark of infection control is to diligently utilize standard precautions, as well as careful cleaning of equipment, to prevent colonization of bacteria and respiratory infections. Infection control using standard precautions is imperative because children with tracheostomies are at higher risk for developing respiratory infections.
This lecture emphasizes infection control practices because they are necessary to prevent infection, and prevention of colonization of bacteria. Consider why practicing infection control would be important while working in the home with a premature newborn with a new tracheostomy, or with a 9 year old child who had a sledding accident and now has a new tracheostomy.
