This lecture will review the basic structure and function of the respiratory system, the physiology of ventilation and oxygenation, available oxygenation delivery systems, and resuscitation devices. Oxygen safety will be discussed and emphasized in this lecture. This lecture will also discuss the principles of decreased oxygen perfusion, which is the cause of hypoxia, and will address how to monitor for hypoxia. Monitoring the child’s oxygenation level is essential at all times, and emphasizes how one must be able to intervene should hypoxia develop.
