This lecture will discuss the anatomy and assessment of the pediatric airway. Much of this information may be a review for you, but it is important to have an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system. Unique aspects of the child’s airway can increase the risk for problems. There are also important differences between the assessment of child or adult to determine if the respiratory status is sufficient. As we discuss these differences, think about how this might affect the care of a child with a tracheostomy. The final part of the lecture will discuss the use of cardio/respiratory monitors.
Note: the lecture notes are available in printable format in the Resources section.
