Pulse Oximeter

Pulse Oximeter

Definition
A pulse oximeter is a non-invasive medical device that indirectly measures the oxygen saturation of a patient's blood.  It is a convenient way to measure a patient’s oxygenation level and can help you to assess a pt’s level of hypoxia.

  • A lighted probe is placed on a finger, toe, or earlobe to measure the percentage of oxygen in the blood.
  • Accuracy is based on adequate blood flow. The reading may be incorrect if probe is too tight or incorrectly placed.
  • 92-100% oxygen saturation is “normal”.  Supplemental oxygen may be needed if oxygen saturations go below 92 %.

  • A pulse oximeter is a helpful assessment device to be used in addition to a nursing assessment. A pulse oximeter should not to be the sole assessment of a child’s respiratory status.
  • Oximeters are not FDA approved as monitoring devices in the home setting due the high incidence of false alarms.
  • Your assessment and observation of the child remains the best way to evaluate changes in the child’s respiratory status.
