Tracheostomy tube

Definition
A tracheostomy (trach) tube is a curved tube that is inserted into a tracheostomy stoma. All tracheostomy tubes have similar parts including:

• Tube or cannula: part that goes in the stoma
• Adaptor : universal size to allow connection of respiratory equipment
• Flange : place to connect the ties
• Obturator : guide used during trach tube change
  

Trach tube come in different sizes and types.

• Internal diameter ranges from 3.0 mm to 6.5 mm for pediatric single cannula tubes.
  
• The length of the tube increases with the increasing tube size. Neonatal trach tubes are shorter than pediatric trach tubes.
  
• Curvature of the trach tube varies by brand and size. The goal is to avoid touching the posterior wall of the trachea.
• Adult sized tubes may have inner cannulas.
• Trach tubes may have a cuff.

Tube selection is dependent on size of the airway. The type of trach tube used is dependent on the child's needs.
