Tracheostomy Go Bag

Tracheostomy Go Bag

Definition
A "Go Bag" is any container that has the equipment and supplies needed to care for the tracheostomy including suctioning and emergency tracheostomy tube change.

  • Things to include in the "Go Bag" are :
    • manual resuscitation device with an appropriate sized mask,
    • same size and size smaller, tracheostomy tube,
    • tracheostomy tube ties,
    • suction machine, suction catheters ,
    • DeLee suction catheters
    • Normal saline
    •  water soluble lubricant,
    •  scissors,
    • tape
    • medical information.
  •   The Go Bag should be checked on a routine basis and this equipment (except for the suction machine) should not be used except for an emergency.

  • Knowing the child's baseline will allow the nurse to better assess when there is a potential airway problem
  • The emergency bag or “go-bag” should be with the child at all times.
  • When there is a change in therapy, such as the use of a speaking valve or the humidity moisture exchanger (HME), the amount of humidification can change which can cause thicker secretions and plugs.
  • Keep up your skills in tracheostomy tube changes by participating in a change every 6 months; review the steps for obstructed airway, decannulation and inability to replace the tracheostomy tube.
